On recently staying in the area I've ordered from Bengal Chaa three times now, collecting in person each time. All things being well and there being no problems with the order they are as nice as pie, prompt customer service, polite manner, etc. However on my third visit there was a problem with the order, and things quickly took a turn for the worse. I ordered a curry and found it wasn't what I'd expect from a curry, it tasted more like a balti than a curry. So I returned promptly to the (empty) restaurant and informed them this tasted like a balti. I then experienced the dark underbelly of Bengal Chaa. The till operator’s face dropped, and he asked why I thought it was a balti not a curry. I explained it tasted different, and he said to look in the dish and tell him if there were onions in it. I said I don't know about onions but it didn't taste like curry. He said if there are no onions in it it’s a curry. I said are you saying a balti without onions is a curry, he said yes indeed, a balti without onions is a curry. That doesn’t make sense for a start, so I requested a refund so I could go next door and buy a curry. He refused, declaring I'd eaten half of it. I asked why I would return home, unpack the curry and settle down to eat it, eat half, then get up again and come all the way back to Bengal Chaa in the cold to complain about it. At this point two more staff joined us and stood around me debating the matter. One of them said he thought I'd eaten some because the curry fit in one tupperware dish when it ought to be overflowing. I said this obviously wasn't the case as I’d brought the whole thing back, and if they cooked up a new curry and mixed it in with rice they'd see it fit in that tupperware dish too. I pointed out rice mixes in with curry much like sugar or sand might, it's not a bulky addition. The original staff member then said if I wanted to return it where was the poppadum. I said the poppadum is complementary and not on the menu so why would I return something I didn't pay for, he said if I wanted to return the dish I should return the whole thing, poppadum too, even if it was free and not part of the listed order. I said if I wanted poppadum I'd have ordered poppadum, they throw it in with all dishes with a little bag of onions which I hadn't returned either (actually I use that little bag in sandwiches the next day usually then throw the rest away, but I didn't mention that). The original staff member then said he wouldn't refund me because the ingredients and preparation cost money and they have overheads to think about. I said the customer should be right and if he didn't refund me he'd have my money and I'd go hungry, which wasn't fair on me. I also said he should be more concerned with building customer relationships rather than scrimping and saving on single dishes, as I'd already been there twice with no problems and were he to be more accommodating would likely come again. I believe at this point one of the other waiters was contemplating refunding me but the original staff member flatly refused, saying he'd never had a problem with any other customers. I said it's not about how you handle things when things go well it's how you handle things when they don't, and I didn't like my dish and he wasn't handling it well at all, why would he insist on keeping my money leaving me hungry after I'd returned the dish in the cold. He then said he would call the police unless I left, and I said to go ahead. He then did actually call the police, and I waited around for them to arrive, which they did quite promptly. When two police officers arrived I told one of them the same thing outside while the other went in to discuss the matter with the staff. By this point there was a whole bunch of staff in there, I'd say five or so, some people had come down from upstairs, it was quite an event in there while I stood outside with the officer discussing the Bengal Chaa customer service. After a while the police officer came out and said they wouldn't refund me but if I still wanted the dish I could have it. Having been delayed by half an hour to 40 mins by this poor customer service I wasn't going to accept my dish back, or indeed any other - I'm not sure what they were offering at the time it might have been a replacement or the same dish repackaged, I don't know but anyway I refused. The police officer recommended I contact the consumer watchdog, and I went next door and ordered a burger and fries instead. So thats the story of the dark, penny-pinching views behind the scenes at Bengal Chaa, for which all those initial smiles are a front. Beware lest you ever have a problem with your order, you'll never get your money back. If you never have a problem with your order, you'll have a great time and come away thinking the Bengal Chaa care about their customers. Should you ever go there I hope you end up with the happy illusion rather than the unfortunate truth.
